PROJECTS
We are always looking for new ways to help look after our local environment and ecosystems. Below are some of the projects and initiatives Kaitiaki Whangaroa has undertaken so far.
Know Your Waterway
The protection, restoration and enhancement of our waterways is essential to all life as they sustain the intrinsic connection of diverse ecological communities.
Kaitiaki Whangaroa seeks to understand and explore the state of health of our rivers in our rohe and undertakes regular comprehensive testing at chosen sites

Waikare Stream Restoration
Waikare stream flows through the heart of our little Kaeo township, meandering through from the Memorial Hall, flowing below the main street, along the Four Square, past the Playground and the Church where it joins the Kaeo River. For many years it has been a sorry sight, often just a little brown trickle, struggling through weeds with rubbish carelessly thrown into it. Kaitiaki Whangaroa aims to restore and enhance our precious stream by planting the stream banks, controlling weeds and raising awareness about the importance of this awa.
Kaeo Working Bees
We saw the need for a regular working bee in Kaeo, when we cleaned up before the installation of the “Reading bench” in memory of our librarian Sabine.

Every 2nd Monday of the month we meet at 2pm at the Memorial Hall, armed with rubbish bags, spades, scrub-cutters, smiles, gloves and rakes to tackle whatever needs doing.
This is very relaxed and informal. Rain or shine. See you there!..
