Kaitiaki Whangaroa

The Association of Kaitiaki Whangaroa has grown from the philosophy of Ngati Miro Kaumatua Hone Paki in addressing both social and environmental degradation. His vision and work were to establish an inclusive “whanau-hapu”group concerned with “tikanga mauri” and the protection, restoration and enhancement of their taiao, or environment.

At first, Nga Kaitiaki o Whangaroa, with a pest control initiative, began the Whangaroa Ngahere and Taiao Restoration Project. In 2018, with the need to become more organised and have a bank account, Kaitiaki Whangaroa Association registered as an incorporated society, with a Committee to administer and manage projects.

As a networking whanau-hapu community we formed a vision for the environment of the Whangaroa rohe and its people. Central to that vision is having water and waterways that are drinkable, swimmable and abundant with nature and diversity. This guiding vision is what informs our work of protecting, restoring and enhancing the environment we all share.
